The Examiner.com has no use for professional journalists. It is instead an experiment in pure citizen journalism. Right now Examiner sites have officially launched in beta for five cities—San Francisco, Chicago, Baltimore, Denver, and Seattle. Although other cities like New York are coming along. The sites have been live for a couple months without any promotion, and collectively are already attracting 1.3 million visitors a month in the U.S.
Each site offers up hyper-local news written by contributors called “examiners.
These writers are vetted and paid based on how many pageviews and advertising clicks their articles can produce. The pay is not a lot. It starts at a $2.50 for every thousand pageviews. The median amount each examiner s making right now is $25 a month…

Maar wat vaststaat, is dat schrijvende journalisten in toenemende mate foto’s maken voor zowel de website als de papieren krant. Maar het is bij ons geen schering en inslag dat er foto’s van journalisten prominent in de krant staan. Fotografie blijft een vak. Alleen de techniek staat niet stil. Journalisten worden generalisten. Door de talloze bezuinigingen is het verleidelijk geworden om journalisten ook in te zetten als fotografen. Maar ik blijf erbij dat fotografie een vak is, net zoals journalist zijn ook een apart beroep is.

“De journalistiek wordt geteisterd door onzekerheid over de eigen rol in een crossmediale en interactieve toekomst. Journalistieke opleidingen worstelen met de vraag voor welk vak zij eigenlijk opleiden, veel leerlingen ambiëren allereerst een baan in de amusementsindustrie”.
“Wie wil debatteren over de kwaliteit van de journalistiek, moet er geen generatieconflict van maken. Er bestaan geen jonge en oude journalisten, alleen goede en slechte. Wie dat uit het oog verliest, moet niet gek opkijken als hij wordt weggezet als een muffe, oude zak”.

“Dat professionele journalistiek voor een belangrijk deel plaats gaat maken voor blogs en user-generated content is gebaseerd op onjuiste interpretaties; het is een simplistische a-historische benadering en het getuigt van een nogal naïeve opvatting over hoe mensen media gebruiken”… “Crossmedia zou in principe alles kunnen omvatten waarbij boodschappen door een zender via verschillende kanalen worden verspreid. Bij voorkeur gaat het om identieke of aanvullende boodschappen of minimaal zaken die gemeenschappelijke elementen hebben. The press has reached its “tipping point” in the struggle against the internet and is teetering on the edge of the abyss. This is the conclusion reached by Vincent Giret and Bernard Poulet in their essay on “The End of the Newspapers” in the latest issue of le debat (excerpts here). Their core argument is that the press is on its way out because the advertising industry is increasingly turning to the spectrum of online alternatives. “The face of the media world is undergoing fundamental changes. Because for the first time since the rise of the mass media at the end of the 19th century advertising, which is the leading source of income for the press, is no longer dependant on journalism as a vehicle for spreading its messages.” And media companies are also no longer investing in media – it’s clicks they want. For example the Springer Verlag in France: “After conducting a year of market research the publishers decided to cancel its project of starting a tabloid along the lines of the German Bild in France. Instead the company spent 284 million euros on buying the popular internet portal aufeminin.com.”

De ongekend snelle opkomst van het oostelijk halfrond zal de wereld drastisch beïnvloeden, even ingrijpend als de opkomst van het Westen ooit deed.
